How to record and transcribe a Google Meet call (and stay on the right side of consent)
October 14, 2026 · 5 min read
You are halfway through an important call and realise you have not written a single note. Later, nobody agrees on what was decided. This is the problem recording and transcription solve, and you have a few ways to do it for Google Meet.
Option 1: Google Meet's built-in recording
Depending on your Google Workspace plan, Meet can record and save a video to Drive, and some plans offer transcripts and notes. The catch is that it is not available on every plan, usually only the meeting organiser or someone in the same organisation can start it, and you still have to read through the result yourself.
Option 2: Screen recording
Free and works everywhere, but you end up with a long video file and no notes. Searching it later means scrubbing through the footage.
Option 3: An AI note taker that joins the call
An AI note taker joins as a participant, records the audio, and turns the conversation into a transcript, a summary, decisions and action items. You do not have to be the organiser, and you do not have to install anything on the other participants' side. This is how Hello Sam works: paste your Meet link and it joins.
Getting consent right
Laws on recording calls differ by country and, in some places, by state. Some require everyone's consent. The safest habit is the simplest one: tell people at the start of every call that it is being recorded, and give them the chance to object.
- Announce the recording at the start, out loud or in the chat.
- Use a tool that identifies itself as an AI and announces the recording automatically.
- Share the notes with attendees afterwards. It builds trust.
- Do not record calls where the participants would reasonably expect privacy.
- If you are unsure about your situation, ask a lawyer. This article is not legal advice.
What a good transcript should give you
- Who said what, with names.
- A short summary you can read in under a minute.
- Decisions separated from discussion.
- Action items with an owner, so you know who has to do what.
Hello Sam does all of the above for Google Meet and is free for 300 minutes a month, with no card needed.
